The traditional village of Val d’Isère is renowned as much for its après-ski activities as for its skiing. Once a quiet resort, it has become one of literally Olympic proportions since the resort hosted the crowning event of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, the men’s downhill on the now renowned “Face” run. Along with Tignes, Val d'Isère forms part of the "Espace Killy" - a network of over 300km of pistes and over 100 lifts. The season starts early (late November) and finishes late (early May) in Val d’Isère, but neighbouring Tignes with its glacier situated at over 3600m can boast year round skiing. Val d'Isère includes different ski areas. The Fornet is the quietest with the simplest runs, but which hold the snow, especially up on its glacier. La Daille has wide and long ski runs suitable for warming up before moving on to Solaise and Bellevarde which offer intermediate/ advanced runs, including the World Cup, downhill run on the "Face". As with Tignes, the area, although busy, is served by some of the most modern and fastest lifts, which serves to keep lift queues to a minimum. Val d’Isère offers everything you could want by way of nightlife. As well as having a plethora of bars, themed bars and restaurants, there are also Internet cafés and cinemas. The layout of the town is linear, and the separate areas are all linked by a free bus service, which runs until the early hours of the morning. See how to get to Val d'Isère by clicking here.
